Mercury- this pixy, little planet that can cause so much trouble…
As most of you probably know, Mercury or Hermes is an ancient god in the Roman/Greek mythology who is described as quick and cunning, moving freely between the worlds of the mortal and divine. He is also portrayed as a messenger of the gods: an intercessor between people and gods. In astrology, the planet Mercury represents communication, intellect and awareness. He gives a quick wit, quick thinking, possibilities, opinions, reasoning and the ability to rationalise things to those who have strong mercurial influence in their natal chart. This is the planet ruler of both Gemini and Virgo and respectively of the Third and Sixth Houses. Mercury is an opportunistic planet, decidedly unemotional and curious.
On an individual level, Mercury has different appearances, depending on how he is positioned. By sign, he represents an individual’s style of communication; by house, reveals which areas of life we tend to intellectualise. For instance, Mercury in Virgo natives are very practical, detail-oriented, logical and quite critical to others; they are perfectionists and want everything and everyone around them to be perfect. If Mercury is in the Eleventh House for example, this gives the native a drive to communities and the ability to communicate well within a group; friendships are also vital for Mercury in the 11th.
We recently passed a difficult Mercury Retrograde period. What does it mean though? 3 or 4 times a year for roughly 3 weeks, Mercury appears to be moving backwards in the sky. This is just an optical illusion as no planet moves back on its orbit. Illusionary or not, however, this state of Mercury affects us in a way- some in a big, others not so. As this is the planet of communication, during Mercury’s retrograde state there tends to be confusion in the information flow between peers and groups of people. This is not limited to any particular type of relationship and can affect any- friendships, romantic relationships, work communication etc.
It is not recommended to sign any form of contracts during Mercury Retrograde. This includes work contracts, marriage contracts, buying/selling contracts and so on. That is because what happens during this state of Mercury doesn’t tend to last long.
Believe it or not, there’s a positive side to Mercury Retrograde too! According to Cafe Astrology, “Mercury retrograde periods can be times of heightened inner awareness, when meditation, benefiting from keeping a journal, reworking old plans, and reviewing past work are favored. Mercury retrograde is powerful for studies, particularly for returning to old studies or for re-learning or refreshing knowledge in a subject already taken.”
Mercury is a small planet with enormous energy. If one knows how to use it well, one can benefit a lot in their life.
